SFL in Vietnam curriculum and practice

Thu Ngo, president of LLEN Asia-Pacific recently presented a seminar on methods for teaching subjects in English to over 1000 participants at Hanoi National University of Education. Attendees included directors of Education Departments of surrounding provinces, school principals, researchers and teachers. They are very interested in the seminar topic because of recent Vietnamese government policy changes with respect to the use of English as a second language in schools.

The seminar covered a range of SFL-related topics including the language and literacy demands of subjects other than English, a sequence of teaching to support students move from oral everyday language to oral academic language to written academic language. The teaching learning cycle was introduced and used to demonstrate integration of content and language in the teaching of Science and English as a second language for Vietnamese teachers.
