ALEA Workshops: Supporting Students’ Writing in the Transition to Secondary School

Several members of the Meanjin chapter of ALEA (Brisbane) participated in a series of online workshops presented recently by Beverly Derewianka on Supporting Students’ Writing in the Transition to Secondary School.

The workshops focused on embedding a language and literacy focus in a sequence of lessons using the teaching-learning cycle as a planning tool. After considering some of the literacy issues in the transition from primary to secondary school, the participants selected a curriculum task relevant to their context and identified a genre related to the task, created a model text to deconstruct with the class, and explored a range of reading and writing practices to integrate into the cycle.
